BIO
Annabel Asher is a singer, writer, actor, multi-instrumentalist and queer Jew from the Valley. They graduated in May 2022 from Wesleyan University studying theater, sociology, and poetry, while also doing improv, acappella, burlesque, and live concerts. Right after graduation, Annabel moved to Brooklyn, NY. Since then, Asher has performed at legendary institutions such as The Bowery Electric, Heaven Can Wait, The Bitter End, Berlin. Bar Freda, and many more. Annabel Asher is on a relentless quest for meaning--and pleasure.
To be seduced by Asher’s glossy, dreamy aesthetic is to miss the point. Their mind is a deep, dark, surprising labyrinth. With their life experiences as a guide, Asher peers curiously into the eye of the void, returns, and shares with us her observations. Asher is not too sure of anything besides the predictability of desire. Music is her vehicle of choice to reckon with her own subconscious motivations. There is an interiority to their work; a feeling that the listener is eavesdropping on something private, but they cannot stop listening. Asher makes the listener a voyeur and has a knack for finding new, twisted inversions of our subjectivity. Power dynamics fascinate Asher. Her work explores the sonic worlds of the occult, the organic, the sensual and the bizarre. Their secret weapon, however, is their freestyling ability. They can spin a full song out of nothing live and on the spot. If music is a string, Asher is playing Cat’s Cradle.
Asher feels the full fantasy in her songs. Rich with sensory stimulation and subtext, they collage a world as dazzling as it is distorted. Images are shaped by memories, dreams, autofiction; lyrics anchored in life’s dialogue, found texts, overheard strangers. Their myriad musical influences include Amy Winehouse, Robyn, Fiona Apple, Frank Ocean, Lorde, Mura Masa, Anderson .Paak, Mac Miller, Solange, LCD Soundsystem, Blood Orange, SOPHIE, Lana Del Rey, Tame Impala, Toro y Moi, Erykah Badu, Angel Olsen, Timbaland & Lady Gaga. With exacting lyricism, a one-of-a-kind alto gravel, and influences ranging from neo-soul to dance-punk, their sound is commanding, embodied, complex, and pays respect to their influences. Asher defies genre.
Asher is also an experienced stage and screen actor. Along with her BA in Theater from Wesleyan, she attended LAMDA in summer 2021. Most recently, they starred in the short films THE CURTAIN directed by Kyla Frieden, and THE DEEP END by Jack Fessenden, which was awarded at Woodstock Film Festival and Indie Short Fest at Los Angeles International Film Festival.
Asher’s debut single “555” produced by MICHELLE’s Charlie Kilgore, was released in June 2023. A garage-inspired track that sonically and lyrically actualizes the experience of being psychotic over somebody to the point where you lose all control of your mind and everything you experience feels like a sign from the universe. Their second single, “the Line,” is a sultry R&B track that asks a simple question: Where is the line? How much ill treatment can one handle before they do something drastic? This track reclaims the power from a toxic situation that left Asher in a swirl of emotion, interrogating the peculiar pleasure and agony of being treated like an object of desire and not a person.
Up next, Asher is to release the first single off their debut EP, “BESTSELLER” on August 2, 2024. The song is called “SHUT ME UP,” a sweaty, piercing track that introduces us to the world of the project: examining moments that reveal everything without meaning to. In this case, it’s the moment right before you’re about to kiss someone where you can’t stop rambling and you just hope and pray that the other person will just stop your yapping and make a move. The song follows Asher’s all-consuming desire (“I don’t lose I get lost / I don’t crush I get crushed”), revealing the glamour, glory, and grotesqueness of a self-destructive attraction.
